Core construction and core density (Pickleball Paddle)
1、Core construction
The core is the main material sandwiched between the two surface layers (carbon fiber / fiberglass). It determines hitting feel, dwell time, vibration and rebound performance. There are 3 mainstream types:
PP Honeycomb core
Polypropylene honeycomb core, the market mainstream, featuring hexagonal honeycomb lattice structure made of polypropylene (PP). Structural parameters: cell size (3~6mm is most common), cell wall thickness, core thickness (12/14/16mm). Features: stable rebound and lightweight. Smaller cells deliver stiffer feel and stronger power; larger cells offer better shock absorption and ball control.
Foam core
EPP / EVA / MPP multi-polymer foam. It is a solid continuous foam material without honeycomb cells. Features: more uniform surface feel, higher forgiveness on off-center hits, excellent shock absorption and reduced risk of core crush. Rebound is softer.
Rare option: Nomex aramid honeycomb core
Stiff with explosive power, yet poor durability. Rarely used in modern pickleball paddles.
Manufacturing process distinction: cold press bonding (glue lamination) and thermoformed one-piece hot pressing (premium competitive paddles).
2、Core density
Core density refers to the weight per unit volume of core material (commonly measured in kg/m³). It is one of the key parameters affecting the paddle’s PBCoR.
Simple rule:
✅ Higher density → stiffer core → stronger energy rebound & power, shorter dwell time
✅ Lower density → softer core → better shock absorption & ball control, longer dwell time, less raw power
Reference density range for PP honeycomb core
- Low density: 60–70 kg/m³|Large honeycomb cells, soft feel, control-oriented
- Medium density: 75–85 kg/m³|Balanced all-round style (most widely adopted)
- High density: 90–120 kg/m³|Small honeycomb cells, stiff feel, power-focused
Note: The equivalent density of honeycomb core is determined by both cell size and cell wall thickness, not merely the intrinsic density of PP material. For the same PP material, smaller cells mean higher equivalent density.
Reference density range for foam core
- 50–65 kg/m³: Soft, great touch for net dinks
- 65–80 kg/m³: Balanced for both offense and defense
- 80–100 kg/m³: Relatively stiff, foam core for power play
3、Core Impacts (for foreign trade & product description)
Core construction sets the fundamental feel profile: honeycomb gives crisp, direct feedback while foam delivers softer, consistent touch. Core density fine-tunes the balance between power and control. It also directly relates to the PBCoR rebound limit required for USAPA tournament approval (current tournament limit: PBCoR ≤0.43).
Combined with core thickness: Thicker core (16mm) favors control and shock absorption; thinner core (12–14mm) leans toward explosive power.
Explanation of the differences between EPP, EVA and XPOP versions(Pickleball Paddle Core)
XPOP is a proprietary engineered foam core (brand-specific, new-generation modified foam), while EPP and EVA are mainstream generic foam materials for pickleball paddle cores.
EPP (Expanded Polypropylene)
Expanded polypropylene, closed-cell foam.
- Material property: Lightweight, excellent thermal stability, closed-cell structure, low water absorption, outstanding fatigue resistance and anti-compression set. It hardly collapses after repeated heavy impacts.
- Playing feel: Firm, solid touch, clean pop, consistent energy return. Balanced power and control; larger sweet spot than PP honeycomb.
- Advantages: Wide working temperature range, stable performance in hot weather, long service life, no easy core crush.
- Disadvantages: Less plush tactile feel than EVA; higher bonding requirement when attaching to carbon face.
- Position: Mid-to-high end core, for players who want stable power and long-term durability.
EVA (Ethylene-Vinyl Acetate)
Ethylene vinyl acetate copolymer foam.
- Material property: Higher density than EPP, good damping performance, soft and plush.
- Playing feel: Soft, cushioned touch, great vibration reduction. Longer dwell time, very good for fine dinks and touch shots.
- Advantages: Excellent tactile feedback, low cost, comfortable shock absorption for recreational players.
- Disadvantages: Temperature sensitive. It will soften under high heat and suffer permanent compression set after long hitting. Gradually turns “dead” and loses rebound over time.
- Position: Entry & recreational paddles; often used as edge buffer or hybrid composite layer in high-end paddles.
XPOP (Proprietary modified polymer foam)
A newer custom foam formulation (brand exclusive, sometimes called XoP in domestic pickleball industry).
- Material property: Modified closed-cell foam, tuned to balance EPP’s stability and EVA’s soft touch. Fine and uniform cell structure.
- Playing feel: Medium-firm, muted impact sound. Dwell time sits between EPP and EVA. Retains good control while maintaining usable pop; more consistent on off-center hits.
- Advantages: Better temperature resistance than EVA, softer than pure EPP, low permanent deformation, quiet impact. Optimized for spin and kitchen control.
- Disadvantages: Custom formula, higher raw material cost, less universal than EPP/EVA.
- Position: Premium new generation core, aimed at advanced players looking for balanced touch, spin and durability.
Quick Comparison Table
| Item | EPP | EVA | XPOP |
|---|---|---|---|
| Touch | Firm & solid | Soft & plush | Medium, balanced |
| Power / Pop | Good, stable | Low-medium | Moderate |
| Dwell time | Short | Long | Medium |
| Temperature stability | Excellent | Poor | Very good |
| Anti-compression set | Great | Weak | Very good |
| Vibration damping | Medium | Best | Good |
| Best for | Power, long durability | Recreational touch, net dinks | All-round, spin & control |
Short paragraph for product report
EPP is expanded polypropylene foam with stable pop and superior temperature and impact resistance, ideal for players who need consistent performance and long service life. EVA foam delivers soft plush touch and outstanding vibration damping, but it is sensitive to heat and prone to permanent compression after repeated hits. XPOP is a proprietary modified foam core that balances EPP’s durability and EVA’s fine touch, offering medium dwell time, quiet impact and reliable spin performance for advanced all-round players.
